Pesky is a multiple award-winning animation studio founded in 1997. They have produced over 120 projects ranging from simple web games to major cartoon series. Their biggest production 'The Amazing Adrenalini Brothers' shows in over 80 countries and won them a BAFTA in 2005. Claire will be giving a potted history of the company, talking about the production process for a 2D Flash animation series and providing top tips to help you create ideas that will catch the eye of the broadcasters.

AD/DRESSING DEATH

I am seeking volunteers to pose for me in a new photography project exploring the notion of death.

My approach is not macabre or morbid; but a wish to explore a subject that is traditionally taboo in Western culture and only visually represented in relation to religion, war or decease and disaster.

I shall set up a small ‘studio’ space in the crypt space of St Mary in the Castle for a week or so during March. There will be a constructed wooden coffin. I am asking for volunteers to imagine the act of dying and wearing the clothes that you really wish to wear upon death and (if you wish) holding a precious personal object that you wish to take with you into the afterlife.

You will pose in the coffin for a few minutes, effectively staging your own version of your death, while I take photographs. The coffin acts as a ‘stage’ for your enactment.

I will ask you to please sign a model release form to allow my use of the image in related exhibitions/catalogue/promotion and will give you a print to keep.

If you express an interest, I can send you a more comprehensive text in the first instance, and then talk about it on the phone.

I need up to 20 subjects and it would be helpful if you give me a very brief description of yourself, i.e. age, gender, race, and one sentence explaining why you want to participate.

A quick report on one of the best museums dedicated to photography that I have been to in a long time. Fotografiska is located in the heart Stockholm where I was just a few days ago. It is a beautiful large building with 2,500 square meters of exhibition space along with an academy bistro, café, bar, conference rooms, shop and event spaces. All this is housed in a former industrial Art Nouveau style building dating from 1906.

The architecture aside, they had four exhibitions on at the moment. An absorbing show of work by Anton Corbijn who I have been familiar with but his recent work is really at a higher level than what I had seen in the past. This Dutch photographer goes way beyond the cliché in his stunning portraiture of ‘celebrities’, artists, musicians, politicians and others. It’s practically worth a trip just to see his work alone.

Other major shows are by Aitor Ortiz. Beautiful, insightful minimalist black and white photographs of architectural based objects and studies of Light within semi and enclosed spaces. Margaret M. de Lange, a Norwegian, shows us a slew of depressingly interesting photographs of the disheartened, disenfranchised in spirit and edge of society human folk. A lot of her work depicts violence in various forms against woman. Not an easy exhibition to view but a definitely worthwhile group of images. The last of the exhibitions is by Ron Haviv, an American photojournalist who has covered both the initial Haitian earthquake in 2010 and it’s people two years later. He works in the finest traditional photojournalistic vein. His work is insightful and pungent with an eye for detail that speaks of large issues and deep feelings.

Do yourself a favour and visit this excellent demonstration of what an exceptional museum of photography this is.

The year is coming to it's end and thus prompts a flurry of news and reviews of 2011, including various 'best of': the top 20 Photo Books of 2011 as determined by Alec Soth and the best photography of 2011 is selected by Sean O'Hagan are a couple of links of interest.

Kevin McCloud of Grand Designs has launched a competition for budding filmmakers, with a chance to win cash, a commission from WWF and equipment from Canon. Details on the link, submissions by 16th January:

Martin Everett - Villa Real (No 3)

Martin Everett will be presenting 'Villa Real' (The light pours out of me) at tomorrow's ArtsFORUM open critique session. A venue for photographers and lens based artists to share unfinished projects, all welcome.

Lucy Phillips is presenting at Friday's 3 minute open on Friday, 16th December between 6pm and 9pm, booking recommended.

The Directory of Photographic Collections in the UK is now online. "The Directory was created by the Photography and the Archive Research Centre, University of the Arts London, London College of Communication, to help researchers to look for photographs relating to their interests. The project is led by Val Williams, and its researcher, since 2004, is Bob Pullen."

Brighton Photo Fringe Open '11

"I visited this exhibition at the Phoenix Brighton yesterday, I had to lead a graduates group crit session for BPF.

The nine artists in BPF Open ‘11 have been chosen by a curatorial collective, made up of curators, practitioners, gallerists and critics “for the ways in which they explore photographic practice and redefine disciplinary boundaries”. There are clearly questions raised through by the artists’ works in this exhibition, questions about perception and reality; about challenging preconceived notions and narrative meaning outside the image frame. Engagement with audience is a crucial element and shifting this engagement to another level of participation in terms of redefining and reframing the way we see and the way we perceive. For example, the first image in the gallery was a very large C-type print by Nadege Meriau entitled “Au Centre de la Terre I”. To me, it looked like a violent thunderstorm with manic white clouds breaking up over a deep red and orange sky, an apocalyptic vision. However, the artist told me that it’s a close-up of the inside of a loaf of bread, cleverly lit up. So I was enlightened – and a bit disappointed!"

Open call - Ireland

Eva International is calling for artists submissions of proposals for the Biennial of Visual Art, Limerick, Ireland. Woodrow Kernohan is the director (previously of Brighton Photo Fringe) who reported "eva International is delighted that Annie Fletcher will be the Curator for the 35th edition of Ireland's biennial of visual art in 2012. We are looking forward to working with her and the selected artists to create an exciting programme of exhibitions and associated events that will animate the city and forge links across Limerick and beyond."

Deadline for submissions is 31st January.

TWENTY

For anyone who missed the full TWENTY exhibition back in October, a selection of photographs from the collection will be on display once again in the Dragon Bar in Hastings, this coming weekend.

From Saturday 10th to Monday 12th December, a select number of photographs will go on sale in this mini-exhibition in Hastings Old Town. As before, all photographs will be sold in strictly limited-edition prints - signed, framed, and numbered out of twenty.

Due to the success of the original exhibition, all prints sold during this three-day show will be at one-off reduced prices. So come get a warm cuppa and grab a bargain!

The 8 month long programme includes workshops, talks, seminars, excursions, practice-related assignments. The new exhibition at Lucy Bell opens Saturday (tomorrow) in St Leonards. 'Christmas Exhibition' will include work by Alex Brattell, Bill Brandt, Chris Duffy, Malcolm Glover and Ken Russell amongst others.

Amanda Jobson has been selected to show work in Underground Gallery's Photography Fair, congratulations Amanda. Exhibition runs from 14th December to 31st December at Underground Gallery, Charing Cross Station, The Strand.

Lucy Phillips' 'What Cannot Be Seen' continues and has some new images with intriguing stories and snippets of lives shared. Films on Vimeo about the project have also been made with Alex Brattell.

Sin Bozkurt's latest event to add to his blog is 'The Cheek of It' (Burlesque School) as he continues to photograph events, gigs and exhibitions.

Terry O'Neill Award prizes and announcements are to be made next Thursday at Hotshoe Gallery, exhibition from 8th to 16th December.

Daniel Meadows is at Sallis Benney Theatre, Brighton, Thursday 8th December at 6.30pm. His career "as a documentary photographer, oral historian and teacher spans four decades and he is recognised as a prime mover in an important group of photographers who spear headed the 1970's independent photography movement including Martin Parr, Brian Griffin and Peter Fraser." Deutsche Borse shortlist has now been announced by The Photographer's Gallery and includes Pieter Hugo, Rinko Kawauchi, John Stezaker and Christopher Williams.

The AOP Student Awards are now calling for entries for 2012 from all students of photography studying BTEC HND or higher.

The Phg/Soco exhibition continues this weekend at St Mary in the Castle. Unfortunately the work of the Artists in Residence was removed without notice to the artists earlier this week. There are some images and statement about the work on Louise's website and posted below. Apologies to anyone who didn't get a chance to see it and had hoped to visit. "A lattice structure suspended either side of the heart, the lungs receive the warmed air drawn through the mouth. The cavity of the chest and the four chambers of the heart offer parallels to the structure of the crypt space within St Mary’s. Connections between mind and body, encountering the qualities of the spirit and structure of the space have resonated and informed the development of this work. Salt as a transient material, associated with purification rituals, loss and residue, simultaneously dissolving and drawing out, denotes the movement of the piece, like the patterning of warm breath on glass. Intricate patterns of the iron air vents that linked the space above to the space below, have been placed, indicating the passage of the breath, the rise and fall, and the journey of the air through the space. The fragility of the transitions between life and death, the physical and the meditative, have cast the lines of exploration throughout the collaboration and the space.

The collaboration has been a key part of this residency, sometimes operating over 600 km, in a virtual and liminal space. Through 147 e-mails, 30 text messages and 4 meetings, the work has developed through a relational practice between the two artists and those spaces/places inhabited. The main component of the body after cremation is salt. During this month Louise and Nicole have taken 714,240 breaths each."

Photo Chain is a lovely project which asks each participating photographer to respond to the title given by the previous participant.

Peter Blake is at the ICA on Saturday, 26th November. An informal Q&A starts at 5pm with Helen Sumpter about his work, life and relationship with the ICA. Free admission.

Also on Saturday (with preview Friday) opens Bernd and Hilla Becher 'Mines and Mills - Industrial Landscape' at Fotomuseum Winterthur, Zurich. Talks run through the weekend.

On Sunday, 27th November, Andrew Kotting's new documentary film 'This Our Still Life' "an eccentric and nostalgic portrait of his daughter Eden" will be screened at Cornerhouse, and is followed by a Q&A which will be chaired by Sarah Perks.

IPSE is an informal group for independently-minded photographers. It provides support for its members with residential weekends, talks, evening meetings and exhibitions, all within an atmosphere of encouragement and non-competitiveness. IPSE encourages the development of an independent vision and practice.

Grace has been linking with IPSE and spent time Saturday talking about her own practice. Tim and Mary Morris are also members so it is great to be connecting up with other groups.

You are invited to come along and write or recount a story based on an image from this exhibition. When results are compared, you might be surprised to discover the range of alternative responses.

The process of narrative exchange may in itself raise some critical issues:
Is the artist's starting point of any more relevance than a viewer's?
What is the relationship of the image to concepts of disclosure and concealment?
How much context does a viewer need?
At what point does representation become illustration?
Is it better in the end to forget the story?

This is a workshop for everyone. No experience required.

Phg & Brighton Photo Fringe - Open '11

Open '11 for the Brighton Photo Fringe presents a series of events between 19th November and 18th December. All events are free and take place at Phoenix Brighton, some require advance booking. "Through an international open call the Open ’11 brings together a diverse group of curators and artists to explore different perspectives on the critical issues emerging from contemporary photographic practice." Weekend

A continuation of the interim shows, and further work in progress, Andrew Moran's solo show at Stone Squid is open from 3pm until 5pm today. This is followed at 5pm by Andrew in conversation with Martin Everett about the work. 'Failure and Success' is interested in whether 'contemporary lens based work is reinscribed in the cultural context in which it was developed'. "Andrew's working method involves a reflective practice of converting text based investigation into visual presentation. Unfolding, repeat or looped video images explore theoretical, psychic and philosophical ideas. The imagery refers explorative thought, against the mimetic representation of the object in the photograph". For further information see Stone Squid's website.

Martin Everett is also at St Mary in the Castle from 12-4pm revisiting 'Auditoria' for Remembrance Sunday. Martin's work is concerned with "the investigation of memory, duration and the inhabitance of the 'on going moment'".

Hastings Independent Photographers, a number of whom are also members of Phg are exhibiting work at One Cafe, 1 London Road, St Leonards on sea.

Next weekend brings the opening of the new exhibition of work with Soco and Phg, 'Masquerade' opens on Saturday between 6.30-8.30pm. (The exhibition runs until 16th December). There is also a chance to see the work developed and installed by 'Artists in Residence' Nicole Zaaroura and Louise Kenward in the crypt space of St Mary in the Castle, Hastings, from 19th November.

Remembrance

As recommended by Michael Hambridge (Public Arts Officer, Hastings), 'Last Letters Home' is a film made by William Parker School students as part of Creative Partnerships work. "...a very poignant and beautiful film...will be screened on Friday in Priory Meadow as part of the Remembrance Day activities. The film Last Letters Home is based on the script for a play, Blood Run, researched, developed and written by the students. This was based on the lives of the young men comemorated on the two war memorials sited in the school. Students in years 9 and 11 worked on the project with a local historian and a dramatist/film maker."

Also for this weekend only is a return of Martin Everett's 'Auditoria', especially for Remembrance Day. St Mary in the Castle, Sunday 13th November 12-4pm.

The current edition of Photoworks is to be the last for editor Gordon MacDonald who is leaving the organisation after 15 years with Photoworks and 8 years as editor. Photoworks Director, Emma Morris says, 'Gordon has made an immeasurable contribution to Photoworks, both in terms of the growth of the organization and, in particular, the achievements of the magazine. Sussex Partnership Foundation NHS Trust's Photography Competition selected it's winners and published submissions on Flickr for World Mental Health Day.

Phg are also supporting a photography project at a newly opened unit with Sussex Partnership Trust in developing the arts as a key factor in recovery and social inclusion for an in-patient rehabilitation unit for men with mental health difficulties. This has got off to a great start and is a tool for developing group cohesion by enabling those living and working on the unit to see how each see the world and to consider meaningful images that share messages of recovery and inspiration.

Photography is discussed by four curators in Sean O'Hagan's Guardian article today. The 'state of the art' is discussed, and with a new V&A gallery for photography and increased prominence at Tate, photography in Britain is catching up just at the time the nature of photography, and also of curatorship, is being questioned.

Conscientious asks "what happened to the mid career artist?" - another article that is worth a read.

Current shows include Tate Modern's 'Photography: new documentary forms' and Diane Arbus (which runs until 6th November). Gerhard Richter, Taryn Simon and Tacita Dean are also at Tate Modern until the new year.

Jonathan Jones's top shows this week includes Alice in Wonderland in Liverpool (from 4th November), Edwardian photographs of Scott in Antarctica (opening at The Queens Gallery, London) and Joseph Beuys is at the National Museum, Cardiff.

A new exhibition opens in Margate tomorrow with a group of 7 artists including Alex Brattell, Cathryn Kemp, Louise Kenward, Lucinda Wells, Martin Everrett and Sinéid Codd, joined by Dawn Cole from Margate. A preview on Friday night includes a dance performance by Yumino Seki and a town crier who will be taking visitors around the town, announcing new shows opening as part of Margate's First Friday and Pushing Print's opening night, Turner Contemporary is also open till late. 'Telling Stories' forms part of the Pushing Print fringe and several participating artists are also in Pushing Print at the Pie Factory. Photography, film, objects, books, and textiles create a diverse and exciting show. Workshops and Artist Talking days run throughout the exhibition. Curated by Cathryn Kemp, 'Telling Stories: Margate' will be a touring exhibition, starting at Marine Studios Margate - running until 1st November. For more information see 'whats on' on A-N. Title: MASQUERADE (Portrait as Performance). We are looking for experimental and challenging, contemporary, provocative, alternative images, inspired by concepts of dressing up, theatrical tableaux, alter-egos and portraits that may address historic, cultural and/or gender identities/stereotypes.We particularly welcome creative collaborations between the two groups. Stuart Griffiths began taking photographs whilst serving as a British paratrooper in Northern Ireland in the late 1980s.  During his service, Stuart began taking photographs that evoked the fear and frustration felt by the young soldiers; he started to question the validity of the British Army’s position: “The pride of being a Paratrooper after time turned to self-questioning, this turned to self-loathing”.

The eventual outcome is an intensely personal account of the trauma and personal conflict he experienced, powerfully expressed in his photographs and his newly published book The Myth of the Airborne Warrior. http://www.photoworks.org.uk/programme/publications/the-myth-of-the-airborne-warrior

His work on injured veterans 'Closer' won the 2010 Brighton Photo Fringe Open and in the same year Stuart was awarded a grant by the National Media Museum.  The documentary film 'Isolation' about his personal work was released in 2009 at the Edinburgh film festival.  He continues to work on self-initiated photography projects and for national and international titles.

This September, Brighton Photo Fringe in partnership with MetroPrint are pleased to launch Online Focus, a free online platform for photographers, lens-based artists, curators and audiences to participate in an experiment with exhibition curation.

Open to everyone everywhere, the Online Focus community of participants will be able to upload images, make selections from uploaded photos, create groupings and themes and build their own online exhibitions that will contribute to a collectively curated exhibition.

The Online Focus will grow and evolve over the next 12 months with the resulting collectively-curated exhibition being printed and mounted by Metro Print and exhibited in the Brighton Photo Fringe festival 2012.

Photofusion opens a new exhibition on Friday of work following the death of a parent. Sensitive and moving, Joachim Froese and Andre Penteado explore a variety of themes including memory and illusion in dealing with loss and grief.

The profound in the everyday can be found in New York's International Centre for Photography until 8th January - with the first major museum exhibition of Peter Sekaer's work. The Danish documentary photographer died in 1950 leaving among the finest photographs of the Great Depression in the US.

VISION11 is now open for ticket bookings - Olympia Photo Festival where art and technology meet - 18th and 19th November.

Positive Image 2011 is a digital photography competition run by Sussex Partnership NHS Trust aimed at promoting positive images of mental health.

"Since its launch in January 2009 we have supported the national Time to Change campaign which aims to end this discrimination.

Our competition aims to show that:

people with mental health problems can and do lead full and meaningful lives

mental illness is common and can happen to anyone

through support, understanding and positive messages we can challenge stigma.

It is vital to get people thinking and talking about mental health problems if stigma is to be overcome. We hope that the competition will stimulate discussion, promote understanding and help to change attitudes."

The sad passing of one of Phg's newest members, Andrew Yates was recently learned. Andrew had been very much looking forward to being an active and involved member of the group. His sudden death last month leaves his partner Sue, whom we share our deepest condolences with. Sue is keen to keep links with the group and to have the chance to share Andrew's work as memorial to him.

Dublin Contemporary 2011 opens with a preview today. Ireland's International Art exhibition runs until 31st October. Stuart Griffiths' book is also hot off the press and available from Photoworks. Stuart has been taking it easy this summer: work for Vice includes a cover shot of the latest edition; his award winning show 'Closer' is opening in Cardiff in September at Third Floor Gallery; he has been working on assignments in Sudan, Siberia, and Belfast; and he is currently working on a project with Oxfam based on George Orwell's 'The Road to Wigan Pier'.

Everett draws upon one of the most influential stories within European literature: Plato's allegory of the cave in Book 7 of The Republic. In this text the philosopher draws a distinction between two forms of reality: the reality of the visible world and the (true) reality of ideas. Everett presents a simple yet highly effective installation using a projector that creates a perceptual and experiential space analogous to that of Plato's cave. In doing so he translates the complex relationship among light source, reflection, silhouettes and representation into seemingly endless stages of mediation, within which reality is continually and newly constituted as the reality of its own being.

Ostensibly it involves the image of the St Mary in the Castle auditorium being projected back into itself to create a 'non-real' reality and thus surrendering the viewer into a semi-permanent state of perspective fixity. This then creates a duality, as outlined above, the quality of character of the venue being two-fold.

Stade Stories open photography competition launches 10th September with exhibitions at the Shipwreck Museum, the Fisherman's Museum and the Blue Reef Aquarium. Prizewinners will be announced shortly by Councillor Jeremy Birch.

A reminder also for all, about the mid-term exhibition at Hastings Arts Forum in October - for everyone interested to get in touch with Andrew Moran who is collating details of expressions of interest.

Martin Everett is finalising numbers for mentoring/portfolio sessions due to start on 5th September at Stade Hall 7-9pm. Get in touch if you haven't yet confirmed your interest for these.

Stuart Griffiths' book has now gone to print and the date and location of launch will soon be announced.

Coastal Currents starts next Saturday with Spotlight from 4-10pm. Louise Kenward's work 'Cave' will be open throughout the festival as part of Spotlight Open with a parallel show in London marking the end of her MA. A taster show for Coastal Currents will be at the Stade Hall. There will also be work from Lucy Phillips and Alex Brattell at 1 London Road, St Leonards and Martin Everett is planning an event in the auditorium of St Mary in the Castle. Details to follow.

The Visual Arts Festival is nearly upon us for another year of events, entertainment and excitement. Kicking off with 'Spotlight' on 27th August, a whole host of wonder and amazement will start the festival. A mix of local artists and those from further afield enrich the month long festival with a great diversity of open studios, one off events and exhibits that run throughout the month.

Helmut Newton's none-too-prude Polaroids can now be seen at Berlin's Museum of Photography. More than 300 are available to see through November 30th, curated by his wife June Newton. The show features Polaroids of Yves St Laurent's atelier, 80's Vogue Paris shoots and St Tropez in the 70's.

ShareYourHeritage invites you to take digital images of specific sculptures and monuments of Brighton and Hove as part of a unique project to record the city's heritage. Your photos will contribute to the library of 2D and 3D models.

Photo Book London are hosting a weekend long self publishing book fair between 2nd and 5th September. Talks and portfolio reviews are some of the events which will run alongside a platform for photographers to get their books seen and sold. The deadline to submit your book has been extended to 10th August.

Magnum Professional Practice in London is inviting submissions for 10 heavily subsidised places on this seminar on 10th and 11th September. Applications are made with 5 themed photographs with an explanation of how your practice would benefit from the opportunity to attend this event. Applications are invited for anyone aged 16 to 25 and while entry is free there will be a £50 fee for the seminar.

'Optimizing exposure' is an essay discussing how to treat digital photography differently to analogue, describing various technical bits and implications. Thanks to Brian for sending the link.

Creative Landscapes Private View with photography by Lynn Weddle, drawings and paintings by Sally Booth will be at Stade Hall from Thursday 8th September - preview 5-6.30pm. Work was made as part of their English Heritage - Accentuate residency on the Stade in 2010.

Cathryn Kemp has been artist in residence at St Mary in the Castle, Hastings, throughout July. This work culminates in an event this Saturday with Nick Weekes 'a collaboration in textiles and sound'. 6th August, 6-8pm.

De La Warr Pavilion will be showing films on the roof top beach through August - including Jaws and The Fog. Film school opens for 13-19 year olds and music continues Sunday afternoons. The Catherine Yass exhibition runs through the summer and gallery interactions and artist talk are other events running in August.

Hereford Photography Festival is calling for artists' film and video work, inviting submissions for moving image work that responds to the idea of 'movement and protest'. Send DVD, CV and artists statement before 31st August. The longest running photo festival in the UK, Hereford opens on 28th October.

Coastal Currents 2011 is on its way and events and exhibitions are coming together, with various things happening in the lead up to the Visual Arts Festival. A pinhole photography workshop will run at Stade Hall on 8th August, with an exhibition on 9th August. It is free, includes materials, and all are welcome - book here.

Louise Kenward's 'Cave' has been selected for Spotlight Open as one of five works that will feature in Coastal Currents. The Spotlight event will open the festival with a procession and many and varied events and activities starting at 4pm Friday 26th August, further information to follow. Ukulele orchestras, Songcycles and Tiny Travelling Tightwire Shows are amongst events for the opening night, along with a performance which looks at the complex world of the undergarment. As ever, there will also be events and exhibitions throughout the festival, Open Studios, workshops and talks. 'Cave' will be open throughout the festival for visitors to see the space Louise inhabited between January and June, exploring, listening and watching. This unseen space beyond the back of Arthur Green's has been part sanctuary part endurance, as work has developed throughout this residence.

Thank you to everyone who has responded about mentoring sessions with Martin and suggestions for talks. The sessions with Martin Everett are planned to start in August and will run for 5 x 2 hour sessions - see post below for more information.

There is still chance to get in touch with Kay to get involved in the great photography debate, to be facilitated by Alex Brattell at the end of August.

Plans are afoot following meetings and discussions so there is a call for interest for the following:

Mentoring sessions with Martin Everett - this will be in the lead up to the October interim show to provide members with the chance to develop work-in-progress, to discuss ideas and share thoughts in a supportive and constructive forum. These are anticipated to start in August with follow up sessions in September and October. A total of 5 x 2 hour sessions will run in Hastings. This would be at a cost of £50 for the whole series of sessions. Grace is keen to hear from anyone who is interested so that times and dates can be set. Please contact Grace for more information and to book a space.

Martin is an internationally exhibited fine art photographer who's work deals with themes of absence/presence in haunting images of spaces rid of human presence. His recent work using light boxes was shown at F_ISH as part of the photo fringe and later went to Manifesta 8, Murcia. They have since become part of the permanent collection in the Musee de la Santa Eullalia, Murcia. 'Before and After Science i and ii' were shown at Towner as part of East Sussex Open, from work made at Herstmonceux Observatory. Martin is currently undertaking a practice based PhD at Queen Mary University and he continues to work with the National Trust and Alzheimers Society. Martin has a wealth of experience and expertise and the mentoring sessions are a great opportunity to be able to draw on this in a supportive environment.

Talks are also planned and suggestions for speakers and topics are welcomed, Stuart Griffiths will talk about his work and forthcoming publication - a date for which will be announced soon. The Photographer's Gallery are running a day long symposium on 3rd September 'Contemporary Vernacular Photographies' at the University of Westminster. They are also continuing to collect your wedding photographs for 'Old New Borrowed Blue' for their online gallery.

The Southbank Centre has launched its new app which features an audio tour, archive images from the Festival of Britain, and updates of events and shows.

F-ISH gallery launch 'Yours to Share' with a show opening on Tuesday, 26th July. The online gallery will show all submissions with a selection framed and hung at F-ISH until 31st July.

Brighton Photo Fringe are also calling for submissions from curators, photographers and lens based artists for Open 2011. Their latest Newswire of events and opportunities can also be found here - which includes Margate Photo Fest opportunities and Berwick Film and Media Arts Festival.

And, a new gallery dedicated to photography at the V&A is to open in the Autumn, with images from Henri Cartier-Bresson among others in a survey of photography since the 1860's.

Photography competition deadline

Last chance to enter the Stade Education Project’s ‘Stade Stories’ photography competition! Deadline closes on Sunday 24th July at 2pm.

Photos are to be on or of the Stade in Hastings Old Town. Any topic can be included but the judges; Cllr Jeremy Birch, Leader of the council; Grace Lau photographer, and Yasmin Ornsby, Chair of the Stade Partnership will be looking for photos that tell a story - whether that be a true life story or a constructed one. Experimental ideas are welcomed.

The Judges are looking for strong ideas rather than technical expertise. It’s about the idea behind the image, the creativity of the person behind the lens, not how good the camera is. The Judges aren’t after David Bailey - they are looking for people who have a good idea and can show the idea through their photo. Even photos taken with mobile phones can be included.

44 of the photographs submitted will be professionally framed by Carbon Framers of Fairlight for an exhibition during Coastal Currents and there are prizes of digital cameras, Marriott’s photo shore vouchers and personalised postcards from Judges up for grabs.

Congratulations to Sue Barnes who is one of the winners for the 'design a deckchair competition' announced this week. Her design and those of the other winners will be printed on deckchairs for the Stade later in the summer.

There are a few days left for the Stade Stories submissions - you have until Sunday to send in photographs for this open competition. See link for details.

Grace Lau is one of the judges for the competition and recently worked with Richard Morris in offering mentoring sessions as part of the competition. He has written about his experiences of this in Hastings & St Leonards Observer 'discovering how a picture speaks a thousand words' and how Hastings is becoming 'a hotbed for photographic talent'.

LPV Magazine is asking people to take a 'bad' photograph. Blake Andrews is inviting entries for the 'Worst Photo Contest'.

Centre Pompidou, "Paris-Delhi-Bombay" runs until 25th September in Paris and is addressing the question of "what is the India of today?". "Inside a dark room, we see a black-and-white photograph of an elephant fetus, rolled up and wrinkled, its delicate trunk contracted in the breathless grip of eternity, doubly preserved for posterity: first in formaldehyde and then in photographic emulsion..."

In an article by Sean O'Hagan this week, he writes about 'Why you are the future of photography'.

The De La Warr continues to run Gallery Events for the Catherine Yass exhibition, where Alex Brattell was focusing on the film 'Lighthouse' today. He will be back on 13th and 20th August facilitating gallery interaction sessions inviting discussion and prompting the creation of collage, drawing or poem. Lisa Barnard will be there next Saturday to introduce 'visual audio' and imagining space through sound.

A new show at Frith Street Gallery opens this Friday with 'Look with all your eyes, look'. "Frith Street Gallery is delighted to announce its summer exhibition, Look with all your eyes, look. A group exhibition, it draws together works by eight artists based in the UK, USA and Europe: Rachel Adams, Sara Barker, Neil Clements, Alex Dordoy, David Maljkovic, Helen Mirra, Rudolf Polanszky and Erin Shirreff. The exhibition, which includes sculpture, painting and photography has no rigid theme but is rather an exploration of form and structure; material and illusion. "

Sophy Rickett and Ed Hughes' 'Auditorium' is getting it's first ever London showing at Brancolini Grimaldi until August 27th. "Co-commissioned by Photoworks, Glyndebourne Opera House and De La Warr Pavilion, Auditorium, a film by Sophy Rickett with a score by Ed Hughes is presented as a video installation at Brancolini Grimaldi in Albermale Street, London."
